How to Download a Video From a Link — MP4, MP3, Quality & File Size Explained
Why one video link offers several resolutions while another offers only one, what MP4 and MP3 really mean, and what to check when a public media link refuses to download.
Copying a video link is the easy part. The confusing part is what happens after you paste it: why one video offers several resolutions, why another offers only one, why MP3 bitrate is not the same thing as source quality, and why a perfectly valid public link can still fail.
This guide is about downloading public video and audio links. MP4 is for keeping the picture; MP3 is for keeping the sound. The choices depend on the source and the way that source exposes its media. A public URL is not automatically a downloadable media item, either: it may point to a profile, a search page, restricted content, or a service a downloader does not recognize.
How a video link turns into a downloadable file
A link identifies a page or media item on a platform. A downloader first has to inspect that source rather than guessing from the page title. It looks for the actual video and audio streams the source makes available, checks their formats and sizes, and then presents the usable choices.
That is why two links from the same service can produce different menus. One upload may expose 1080p video and a separate audio stream. Another may only expose a 480p file with audio already combined. A third may be a page that contains no single media item at all. The tool can only show what the source actually serves for that URL.

MP4 vs MP3: choose based on what you need
MP4 is a video output. Choose it when you need the moving image, such as saving a permitted tutorial for offline reference or keeping a clip with its original visual context. The available resolution may be 360p, 720p, 1080p, or something else depending on the source. MP4 does not mean that every resolution is available.
MP3 is an audio-only output. Choose it for a lecture, interview, song, or other media where the picture is not useful. It produces a smaller, more convenient audio file, but it cannot preserve information that was never present in the source audio. Some sources expose a clean audio stream; others expose only a combined video file, so MP3 availability is source- and workflow-dependent.

Why the same platform can show different quality choices
Quality choices depend on the individual upload, its processing history, and the streams the platform makes available. A video uploaded at 720p cannot supply genuine 1080p detail just because a downloader has a larger number in its menu. Likewise, a source that exposes only one usable stream cannot be turned into a choice of several authentic resolutions.
YouTube is a clear example. Its video and audio are often stored as separate streams. A downloader can combine a selected video stream with a compatible audio stream to produce one MP4, but it still has to start with streams YouTube actually provides for that video. File size follows the same logic. Higher resolution, longer duration, and a more detailed source usually require more data. An MP3 with a higher output bitrate also takes more space than the same duration at a lower bitrate. Why a public-looking link can still fail
“Public” usually means that the media page can be opened without a private session. It does not mean that every automated request will find a usable stream. Common reasons include:
- Private or login-only content. A page that asks for an account, membership, or a logged-in session is not the same as a public media URL.
- Deleted or expired media. If the source no longer serves the item, a downloader cannot recover it from the old link.

Platform-specific gotchas
TikTok. The intended input is a direct public video URL. Mobile shares using vm.tiktok.com or vt.tiktok.com can sometimes fail to resolve through the extractor. If that happens, open the link in a browser and copy the final tiktok.com/@user/video/... address. TikTok photo or slideshow posts are a different media shape from a normal video post, so results may not be consistent. YouTube. A normal video URL and a playlist URL are different jobs. A single-video flow identifies one item and can show its video and audio choices. A playlist is a multi-item selection and export workflow, so a playlist link belongs in the dedicated playlist flow rather than the single-video box. The available resolution also belongs to each video, not to the playlist as a whole.
SoundCloud. An individual public track is different from a set or playlist. SoundCloud is an audio-native workflow on NoBsDL’s dedicated page, so it offers MP3 output when a real track stream is available rather than a video menu. A private track, subscriber-only track, region-restricted track, or removed track may not provide a source stream to read.
Universal input. A specific video page is better input than a homepage, search page, channel, or profile. The universal downloader is for other recognized supported sources, not a guarantee that an arbitrary URL contains one downloadable media item.
