Understanding Calories Burned: A Deeper Dive
This calculator estimates your total daily energy expenditure — roughly how many calories you burn in an average day, including rest — not the calories burned in a single workout session. It first estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the calories your body burns at complete rest, using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation:
Male: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
Female: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
Your BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor to estimate total daily calories burned:
| Activity Level | Description | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Sedentary | Little or no exercise | 1.2 |
| Lightly Active | Light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week | 1.375 |
| Moderately Active | Moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week | 1.55 |
| Very Active | Hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/week | 1.725 |
| Extra Active | Very hard exercise & physical job, or 2x training | 1.9 |
If you're looking to estimate calories burned during a single specific activity (e.g. "30 minutes of running"), that requires a MET-based single-activity formula, which this tool does not calculate — it estimates your daily total, not a per-workout figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the calories burned calculator?
Our calculator provides an estimation based on generally accepted metabolic equivalents (METs) and your provided data. Individual results can vary due to factors like your metabolism, fitness level, and the exact intensity of your activity. For precise measurements, consider using a heart rate monitor or fitness tracker.
What factors influence the number of calories I burn?
The primary factors influencing calories burned are your body weight, the type of activity, the duration of the activity, and its intensity. Higher body weight generally leads to more calories burned. More vigorous and longer-duration activities will also result in a higher calorie expenditure.
Does this calculator estimate calories for a specific workout?
No — this tool estimates your total daily calorie burn (BMR × activity level), not calories burned during a single activity like a 30-minute run. For a specific workout, you'd need a MET-based calculator that accounts for that activity's intensity and duration.
