How We Calculate Body Fat

We use the Deurenberg formula: BF% = (1.20 x BMI) + (0.23 x Age) - 16.2 for men, and - 5.4 for women. BMI is calculated from your height and weight. This is a widely accepted approximation when body circumference measurements are not available.

For higher accuracy, the US Navy method uses waist, neck, and hip measurements. Formula for men: BF% = 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 8.457.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 14-17% is fitness level and 18-24% is average. For women, 21-24% is fitness and 25-31% is average. Athletes typically fall below these ranges. Essential fat (minimum needed for basic function) is 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women.

How accurate is this calculator?

It provides a reasonable estimate using BMI, age, and gender. For clinical accuracy, DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing are more precise. Use this as a tracking tool over time rather than a one-time diagnosis.

How often should I check my body fat?

Once a month is sufficient for general tracking. Measure at the same time of day for consistency. Body fat changes slowly — weekly measurements can show misleading fluctuations due to hydration and other factors.
